Detailed Service Note
Content
Situation
This defect appears as a repeating or "ghost" image that prints 76mm below the original image. It will most commonly repeat on gray areas. It has been called "ghosting", cold offset, or "Northern/Nordic Countries Defect".
It is caused when the fuser gets too cool and toner is attracted to the fuser roller by electrostatic forces. On the following rotation of the fuser roller the toner is transferred back to the paper. Factors that can cause this defect to manifest are low line voltage, low humidity, or high resistance paper. It most frequently manifests at low temperatures, although low temperature is not actually a factor.
Solution
The solution is to modify the angle that paper moves into the fuser. This decreases the possibility that toner will transfer onto the fuser roller.
Action
To Be Performed By HP Qualified Personnel
To replace the fixing guide (RB2-3958-030):
1) Open the printer door.
2) Remove the face-down roller assembly.
3) Remove the delivery assembly.
4) Remove the fixing pressure assemblies.
5) Disconnect left fuser connector.
6) Lift fusing roller partially up and away.
7) Remove screw from fixing guide.
8) Lift fixing guide out.
9) Install new fixing guide.
10) Reassemble the printer.
Use Service Manual (C4224-90962) or Service & Support CD (C4224-60140) for more details on disassembly procedures.
